Application: Casein hydrolysate (acid hydrolyzed) is obtained by digesting casein hydrochloric acid. The conditions are such that a proportion of the vitamins and growth-promoting substances are retained. It therefore acts as a good nutrient substrate and is especially suitable for the large-scale cultivation of microorganisms (e.g of diptheria spp., tetanus bacilli and streptococci in the production of toxins and strepase). Because tryptophan is destroyed by digestion, the indole test cannot be carried out with the hydrolysate alone.
